Job Description: Barista

Hours: Full-time and Part-time
Pay: $13.50/hr +tips (minimum of $17.50/hr)
About Us:
New Sound Cafe (NSC) is a community cafe designed to serve the Austin neighborhood. We take pride in serving quality coffee and tea, supporting local suppliers, and providing excellent service. NSC resides in a historic gospel record shop near the corner of Lake and Austin on the west side of Chicago. All profits will be donated to nonprofit organizations in the Austin neighborhood. As we prepare to open our doors, we’re looking for enthusiastic, reliable, and personable baristas to help us bring this vision to life.
Job Summary:
As a Barista at our new coffee shop, you’ll be one of the first faces customers see—so friendliness and enthusiasm are key! You’ll be responsible for crafting delicious coffee and tea beverages, serving food items, keeping the space clean and cozy, resulting in an excellent customer experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Greet and engage with every customer with a warm, welcoming attitude
- Prepare and serve high-quality coffee, espresso drinks, teas, and seasonal beverages
- Learn and maintain knowledge of coffee beans, roasting and brewing methods and equipment as well as carefully handle and maintain equipment
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment
- Restock supplies and communicate inventory needs to management
- Assist with opening/closing duties, depending on the shift
- Offer relevant ideas and suggestions for improving cafe operations.
- Contribute to a team-oriented, supportive workplace culture
What We’re Looking For:
- Some barista or customer service experience preferred—but we’re willing to train the right person
- Friendly, reliable, and great with people
- Teachable attitude and desire to learn
- Strong attention to detail and cleanliness
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to communicate effectively with others, including giving and receiving feedback. Use communication that is clear, honest, and complete.
