About This Role

Job Summary: The Rowing Instructor is responsible for teaching a variety of sculling classes at Thompson Boat Center. Instructional programs are for both adults and youth from novice to experienced rowers. Classes most frequently occur from 6am to 10am and 3pm to 8pm on weekdays and 6am to 12pm on weekends. Schedules will vary throughout the season. Teaching and scheduling private lessons with guests and helping them work towards their individual training goals Ability to respond to guests questions about the sport and programs we offer Respond professionally back to calls and emails to schedule classes and lessons Follow the assigned curriculum to teach the lessons The Rowing Instructor will work directly with the site Managers, Shift Supervisors, and fellow Rowing Instructors at Thompsons. Desired Skills & Knowledge: Experienced teaching sculling is required. US Rowing training or certification preferred. Ability to speak to a large group with confidence and enthusiasm Effective teaching and communication skills Desire to share passion for the water sport Previous experience as a rower or coxswain required Ability to memorize facts and routines Ability to swim and demonstrate rescue procedures Experience driving a safety launch and a Washington DC Boater Safety Course Completion or Boating License First Aid & CPR Certification preferred Physical & Mental Requirements: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly frequent movements from place to place within the unit. Bend, lift, carry, reach/extend arms and hands above shoulder height frequently, or otherwise move in a constantly changing environment. Lifting, carrying, and pushing up to 25 lbs. regularly, 30-35 lbs. frequently, and up to 50 lbs. occasionally. Ability to stand for the entire workday. Climbing steps regularly. Working in wet and slippery conditions. Working for long hours in an outdoor, hot, and damp environment. Frequently immerse hands in water. Withstanding temperature extremes in outdoor environments and inclement weather. Proficient in speaking, reading and writing in English. Speech recognition and clarity, including the ability to understand the speech of customers and co-workers and the ability to speak clearly so that you can be understood by customers and co-workers in English. Physical presence at the job site is essential to perform job duties.
