Relief Cook

Could you support us in cooking for the hungry? Big Breakfast Plus is a volunteer-led organisation, focused on providing a free cooked breakfast to those in need and hungry in Swindon. We have an amazing team of Cooks and volunteers who successfully deliver a choice of breakfast options to those who need it. We are open seven days a week and operate out of The Pilgrim Centre in Regent Circus. The spirit and camaraderie amongst the team and our guests is truly inspiring and sets every day off to a good start! To ensure that our vital service remains uninterrupted and continues to operate like a well-oiled machine, we now need an additional Cook to provide ad hoc cover for staff absences, such as holidays, throughout the year. As a Relief Cook, your main role will be to prepare freshly cooked breakfasts for typically 75 -85 guests per shift. Working alongside our team of volunteers, you will help to ensure that everyone receives a warm and friendly welcome and a hot meal to start their day. In addition to your cooking skills, you will need a good knowledge of food safety, holding a Level 2 Food Hygiene in Catering certificate (or above), in addition to completion of the FSA Allergens course. You will have a calm and organised approach and have empathy towards people who are facing a challenging time. You will ideally have worked in a professional kitchen, perhaps in a school, Day Care Centre or residential home. Experience supervising others in a kitchen environment would be a great advantage. Each shift is managed by a Lead Volunteer, and you will work closely with them and the volunteer team to ensure a smooth service throughout. It’s a super-friendly, welcoming and supportive environment to work in and enjoyed by both new and regular guests daily. This position is based on an as-needed basis, with prior notice for planned absences. Your working hours will be 06:00am to 9.30am for each shift and can include weekends.
